reveals women at risk from lack of tyre knowledge New research by Continental Tyres in the UK reveals that women are putting themselves in danger due to a lack of tyre safety awareness. The survey found 1 in 3 women do not know how to change a flat tyre, as opposed to just 3% of men. 1 in 25 women do not know where their spare tyre is located! When faced with a flat tyre, panic sets in with over a third of women calling their partner before the emergency breakdown services. Only 1% of men would consider phoning their partner to come to the rescue, while an informed 73% of men would take the initiative to change the wheel themselves*. The study, which analysed the attitudes and knowledge of over 1,000 men and women towards car tyre safety, also revealed that over half of women have never checked their spare tyre to ensure it is in top condition. What's more, almost half of the women surveyed admitted they have never checked the tread on their tyres. 39% have never checked their tyre pressure and 47% do not even know the correct tyre pressure for their vehicle, while a worrying 22% confessed they have no idea how to find out the correct tyre pressure. The findings are in line with Semperit research in Ireland. This indicates that only one in five female motorists, compared to 58% of males, regularly check the condition of their tyres. Anne-Marie Horgan of Continental comments: "With approximately 40% of cars now owned by women, it is more important than ever for them to be clued-up when it comes to their tyres. Your tyres are the only part of your car to touch the road, and it's vital they're kept in good condition to avoid accidents and keep breaking distances to a minimum." Drivers should check the pressure and tread of the tyres and inspect them for damage at least every two weeks. * Never attempt to change a tyre on the motorway. |
