Large turn-out for anti-dump protest
Over 200 vehicles are estimated to have taken part in a motorcade protest
organised by the Kilconnell-New Inn-Cappataggle Anti-Dump group, along
with several hundred people on foot.
The convoy of vehicles began its journey outside the creamery in Kilconnell
before making its way slowly along a 16-mile route, finishing where they
started.
The group are protesting against Celtic Wastes proposed opening
of a dump in the area. The waste company have earmarked three potential
sites, all in or around Kilconnell.
Anti-Dump spokesman Tom Finn said: The recent protest was about
putting down a marker to Celtic Waste that we are going to fight this
to the end and are not going to accept these people throwing money around.
With Galway County Council shortly expected to announce its preference
from three short-listed sites currently under investigation at Kilrickle,
New Inn and Newbridge.
Celtic Waste have stated that they have no comment to make on the matter
pending the result of an Environment Impact Study on the Kilconnell site,
which they expected shortly.
