Westmeath/Roscommon Councils agree to facilitate broadband
developments in the area
The haulage industry in the Westmeath\ Roscommon region will be glad to
hear that documentation regarding the agreement made by the two counties
was supplied to councillors recently stressing that broadband infrastructure
and service were essential to create conditions for competitve growth
in high technology based enterprises.
It explained that the Midlands submission was for a regional broadband
ring connecting the main populations centres and metro rings for the five
main population centres.
At a recent Meeting of Roscommon Council, County Manager, John Tiernan
said he was delighted with the agreement and that Roscommon town was phase
one and he had no other information as to when the next phase would be.
Cllr Tom Crosby said that the NRA should be alerted to the initiative
and the cable put in while roads were under construction. He then proposed
that the County Secretary write to the NRA to have proper ducting done
as part of all major road projects in future.
The County manager also stated that the big pay day would be that Roscommon
would be in a better position to provide higher grade effective employment.
When the project is completed, it will put the midlands on the technology
map and be of great benifit to the haulage industry in telecommunications.
