Limerick West put on electronic map

Parts of Limerick have just gone online and it is hoped that most of the county will be of the same in the near future according to Catherine Hartigan of As Duchas Dochas.

The project will be of benefit to many businesses including the haulage industry and is set to put Limerick on the electronic map.

Ms Hartigan said “the historical section was done mainly through the library and through primary research but the rest was footwork. Over a six week period the trainees approached all businesses - big and small - in the town and also approached all the town’s voluntary organisations. At least now all information is in the one place.

“There are sections dealing with pubs and restaurants, travel and tourism, hotels and B&B’s, history, education, arts and culture. You can even find bus timetables and the opening hours of the library.

“There is also a community news section which will be updated to let people know what is happening and when. The target audience is very wide. It might be a Russian thinking of coming to Newcastle West for a holiday or a schoolchild wanting to do a project,” she said.

Once all the West’s towns and villages are online, Gateway to the West will provide a dynamic and up to the minute electronic overview of life in West Limerick.
