Substantial rush-hour delays are being experience by motorists in the county after a trailer drawing livestock was struck by another truck.

As a result of the early-morning accident, the northbound M9 (at the Athy turn-off ; J3) had to be completely closed down.

Gardaí were quick to arrive at the scene, where an operation is underway clearing livestock and debris from the road.

No motorists were injured in the incident - but those who were first on the scene were delayed for up to two hours.

Diversions via the old Dublin Road (R448) are now in place, however, and the delay time has been reduced significantly to approximately 30 minutes.
