Gem Oils Ltd. continue to sparkle

Gem Oils Ltd. based in Regaskin, Cavan is celebrating 40 years in business this year. The family run company specialises in the packaging and distribution of an extensive range of high quality oils and lubricants for use in the transport, quarrying, agricultural and pharmaceutical sectors.

Managing Director Alec Milligan gave Irish Trucker an overview of operations. Gem Oils prides itself on the wide and extensive range of products it supplies to its equally wide customer base. Lubricating oils, process oils, cutting oils, chain and way lubricants, compressor oils, release oils, aerosols, anti-freeze and speciality greases are just a few of the products the company carries in its impressive product portfolio.

Over the years the GEM brand has become synonymous with quality and service and the company has built an enviable reputation on these cornerstones. "We can also give a technical back-up which is second to none.

We are one of the few companies in Ireland that can offer technical support," Alec added. The company has carved out a very successful niche in the market supplying small to medium sized businesses where quality products backed up by a quality service is crucial to the buying decision.

One of Gem's best known and most loyal customers is the Quinn Group based in Derrylin in Co Fermanagh. "We supply oils and lubricants to the Quinn fleet as well as to the cement factory and the quarries," Alec added.

Maguire International Transport in Ballinode, Co Monaghan and Kinahan Commercials in Moate, Co Westmeath (Mercedes dealer) also use the GEM brand exclusively. Gem Oils is acutely aware of the importance of developing brand loyalty amongst its customers. To that end the company works extremely hard in its chosen geographic markets. "We have a very strong and loyal customer base.

We have a dedicated sales team that know our customers and more importantly know their requirements. We call to all our customers in person. We cover Northern Ireland and the northern half of the Republic. We cover from Galway to Dublin and everywhere above that," Alec enthused.

Not content to rest on its laurels the company is continually expanding its customer base as well as the geographic areas it services. "The Mercedes dealer, Surehaul based in Carrick-on-Suir would take a lot of our products for sales to the haulage industry, we aregaining market share because we won't compromise on quality. We are expanding because of the range of products we can offer, the quality of the products, and the levels of service we deliver," Alec commented.

In what is ultimately a very price sensitive market Gem Oils is more than able to compete with the multi-national operators. Alec concluded: "We are a very tight operation. We keep our cost base very low. Keeping costs to a minimum is one of our strengths. Consequently we can compete with the 'majors' on price. That, combined with quality and service gives us the edge."
