King of all it surveys

The rise of Cargo King is one of the mid-west’s undoubted success stories over the last ten years. David Sheedy outlines Cargo King’s evolution since its foundation in 1985.

Asked to sum up the reasons behind the success story that is Cargo King, the company’s sales and marketing manager David Sheedy keeps things simple. He insists that there’s no magic formula. Instead, hard work and dedication on the part of the company’s workforce and an adherence to a policy which ensures a quality service is provided to its customers at all times is, he says, at the root of the firm’s popularity and success.
And certainly any in-depth analysis of the company’s structures and means of operating readily supports David’s view of just why Cargo King continues to go from strength to strength.

Cargo King has a proven record of achievement in the warehousing, transportation and logistics business. Based in Newmarket-on-Fergus, Co. Clare, the firm was established by Aengus King in 1985 and over the years it has evolved to become one of the top operators in its field in the mid-west region.
“The company has grown and developed every year since its foundation and we’re pleased to report that this year has been another good year for the company despite everything that has effected the economy, domestically and internationally,” David enthuses.

Indeed, the company is riding on a high right now as its relatively new warehousing facility continues to operate on a near full capacity. With the purchase of four new trucks planned for the new year, the Cargo King team is clearly brimming with confidence and optimism.
“I’m personally very optimistic that we can continue to do very well on all fronts. The company is doing well at the moment and we’re determined to move forward by securing new contracts with airlines, manufacturing companies and various agents outside our existing customer base,” adds the Newmarket-on-Fergus native.

Although a relatively small operator in national terms, Cargo King thrives on providing a top-quality service with a personal touch. In many ways, the mantra ‘small is beautiful’ is very much top of the pops with Sheedy and the rest of the Cargo King team.

RATIONALISATION
“We believe that being a relatively small operator, we can guarantee that the customer will get what he wants, when he wants it.
“The company is totally customer driven. We are on first name terms with practically all our customers and they appreciate the intimacy such a relationship provides. That’s probably one reason why we have benefited so much over the years from repeat custom.

“We have regular in-house customer care training programmes and such training shines through in our dealings with our customers, old and new. That’s why a lot of the customers we had ten and fifteen years ago are still doing business with us,” explains David who has been employed by Cargo King for the past three years and who is proud of the fact that Cargo King received ISO 9002 accreditation as far back as 1994.
It’s interesting to learn that Cargo King are able to assign staff to individual customers, thus ensuring that comprehensive knowledge is quickly gained, and customers feel they are dealing with the company’s own specialist.

Training needs for all Cargo King’s drivers are identified and all drivers are trained in correct procedures which specify the method of handling and loading of goods.
Privately owned by Aengus King, Newmarket-on-Fergus firm is also fortunate in terms of its locations. It is only easy access etc. from Shannon Airport. Over the years it has developed business much further away from its mid-west base though and, nowadays, boasts clients as far away as Britain and the continent. As well as, the company hopes to secure new business with German airline in the coming months.

IMPORT AND EXPORT
Of course, as intimated earlier, the quality of Cargo King’s service is one of the company’s major plus points in its ongoing successful campaign to consolidate existing customer contracts while in addition securing new ones.
For instance, Cargo King - employing some 20 people - boasts a daily UK import and export groupage and full load service. It’s logistics service is second to none while it’s reputation for secure warehousing, for long and short durations, precedes itself. Handling dangerous goods is a speciality also while domestic collection work for onward forwarding is also second nature to the Cargo King team.

Of course in order to provide such a specialist and professional service (including a 24 telephone help line), the Cargo King team has had to acquire the most up-to-date and most efficient machinery around.
In this respect, the go-ahead Clare-based firm boasts a fleet of 41 trailers which includes high-volume cube mega rollerised box/curtainsiders; temperature controlled trailers; refrigerated trailers - tilts box/curtainsiders; euroliners, both standard and rollerised. In addition, 20 foot vehicles and vans are also available.
Above all perhaps, its Cargo King’s superb warehousing facilities which makes it a cut above the rest and keeps it one step ahead of the posse in the mid-west.

Cargo King opened its original 6,000 sq. ft. warehouse in October 1996, extended it to 26,000 in 2000, enabling the company to undertake documentation, import and export procedures, palletising and loading.
The company offers its customers the flexibility to install their own computer equipment in its warehouse office, if required. The warehouse itself offers loading dock facilities with levelers that will allow for the simultaneous loading/unloading of 40ft vehicles. In addition, there is a large parking site facility for 40ft trailers.
“Our warehouse is complete with fully adjustable racking capable of housing 4,500 pallets at anyone time, irrespective of the size of the pallet.

“Our new warehouse is just opened over 12 months but its practically operating to full capacity. The fact that we’re completely independent and not associated with freight agents gives us the opportunity to work with manufacturing companies directly and that is something which appeals to a lot of our customers.”
That and much more besides.
