Unique ERF eight wheeler is the long and short of it

Halifax-based owner operator John Travis has replaced his ERF six wheeler with a unique maximum length 8x2 tag axle rigid from the same manufacturer.

Specified to carry palletised loads - mostly powders and drums for the chemical industry, the ECX11. 38RR4 has an 8.52m outer axle spread and is fitted with a 9.2m long curtain sided Boalloy body that provides deck space for a further two pallets. Operating at 32 tonnes, gvw, payload capacity is boosted by 5 tonnes.

To reduce tyre wear and aid vehicle manoeuvrability when travelling lightly laden or empty, the tag axle remains in the raised position. As payload increases, it lowers automatically to keep axle and vehicle weights within legal limits.
