Truckers won’t pay toll at Port Tunnel

Truckers using Dublin Port Tunnel will not be charged for the privilege when the tunnel is finally completed in September 2004.

It is expected that some 9,000 trucks will use the tunnel every day. Project manager Sean Wynne, says it will take just six minutes to get from the motorway to the port.
Cars will pay varying amounts depending on the time of the day, according to Wynne.

Diesel sales plummet in north Sales of diesel have plummeted in the north as hauliers cross the border in their droves to fill up with cheap fuel. Diesel imports have fallen through the floor in the last three years. In 1997 337,915 tonnes of diesel were imported. In 2000 the figure had more than halved to 149,830 tonnes.

Significantly, the illegal sale of laundered fuel coupled with cheaper prices in the Republic has been blamed for the slump. Duties on fuel in the UK are amongst the highest in the European Union.
