Sign of the times
Speed limit signs in Ireland can best be described as erratic and
confusing. However, the problem is not peculiar to these shores.
Across the pond the Association of British Drivers has criticised the
government for the lack of uniformity in setting speed limits and the
overall lack of speed limit signs.
The Association believes the high incidence of speeding can be blamed
in part on poor signing, rather than a deliberate wish to break the law
on behalf of the motorist. The Association has acknowledged that some
drivers "drive like idiots" but the vast majority of motorists
would obey the speed limit if there were better signage.
The Association of British Drivers is a voluntary organisation established
to lobby on behalf of British motorists under the heading "Reclaiming
the roads for the people who pay for them".
