Dennison delivers fishy solution in Killybegs

Dennison Trailers has helped Killybegs Transport implement an innovative and efficiency enhancing way of delivering freshly caught fish from the harbour to the food processing plant. The haulier works for Killybegs Seafoods, one of Ireland’s leading processors and exporters of fish, taking catches from ports around Ireland and the north of Scotland to the food company’s factory at Killybegs, County Donegal.

Naas-based Dennison has supplied Killybegs Transport with a purpose built tri-axle step frame tipper to speed up the loading and unloading of wet fish. The transport firm has been so impressed with the time and money the trailer has saved, that it has ordered two more. The tipper’s 60-cubic-yard body comes complete with a fixed roof and a sluice at the rear. When a trawler docks, the wet fish are pumped through the sluice into tankers on the trailer. At the factory, the tipper can then pour the fish straight into the food processing equipment.

The trailer, which is pulled by a 38-tonne Scania 144 4x2 artic, has an unladen weight of approximately 7 tonnes and is equipped with ROR drum-braked axles and air suspension. Temperature control equipment is not needed due to the relatively short journeys that are involved and the chilled water in which the fish is pumped.

Killybegs Transport has been in business since 1986 and, from its County Donegal base, operates throughout Ireland, the United Kingdom and Europe. In addition to its work for Killybegs Seafoods, its 13-vehicle fleet - made up of Scania 144s and Volvo FH12s - is involved in general haulage and other specialist areas such as refrigerated loads, oil and hazardous products.
