Stralis wins International Truck Of The Year 2002
Ivecos flagship, Stralis has been voted International Truck
of the Year 2003 by a jury of leading commercial vehicle journalists
from across Europe.
 |
Stralis stormed to victory with almost 50 per cent of the total
votes cast, against competition from five truck manufacturers which
put forward the DAF XF95, Scania HPI, Mercedes Axor, MAN TGA and
the Volvo FM range of trucks.
Iveco has won the accolade for its strong product credentials, well-designed
Active Space cab good build quality, proven driveline
and impressive use of electronics offering driver and operator alike
a host of vehicle and fleet management information.
Giuseppe Franchi, Managing Director of Iveco Ford Truck, says: Stralis
has received a fantastic reception since its launch and the feedback
we are getting from customers justifies it as the worthy winner
of this prestigious award.
Iveco has the reputation for launching award-winning vehicles
and the Stralis joins other noteworthy winners in our range including
the Daily City Truck, Cargo and EuroTech marques.
Stralis was launched internationally at the Amsterdam RAI Show in
February 2002 and there have been over 8,000 vehicles ordered to-date
across Europe. This represents a performance increase of 34 per
cent on the same period last year (2001), in contrast to a market
which is down 16 per cent overall.
In the UK we have already registered nearly 300 Stralis tractor
units, adds Mr Franchi. Customers range from owner operators
to large haulage fleets, as well as a number of major rental companies
such as Hill Hire, Fraikin, Eurohire and Gullivers, he adds.
The secret to the Active Space Cab is that it incorporates
the very latest in Italian fair with a modular design which can
be easily adapted to suit a variety of roles, whether it is for
use by a single driver, a driver who occasionally carries a passenger,
or for a team of two drivers involved in either domestic or pan-European
transport.

Its flat-floor makes it easy to move around inside the cab, which,
in a standard configuration, is equipped with a single bunk, a comfort
seat for relaxation and a fold down table. Other regular features
include a 24 litre slide-out fridge, mini-safe, and a dashboard-mounted
five-inch colour screen displaying a wealth of information to the
driver.
Stralis is available with two different engines: the 10.3 litre
Cursor 10 that comes in power ratings of 400 and 430 hp and the
12.9 litre Cursor 13 that is offered at 480 and 540 hp. These Cursor
engines are latest generation designs that have been pioneered since
1999 and utilise the very newest technology. They are characteristically
powerful, quiet and clean, and in this respect, easily meet the
current Euro 3 emissions requirement.
All four engine variants are used in conjunction with the latest,
fully automatic EuroTronic transmissions supplied by ZF. Synchronisation
of the main box is achieved electronically, precluding the need
for conventional synchronisers and thus saving weight. Electronic
control also effectively eliminates the possibility of incorrect
selection and over-revving.
The Stralis range consists of two and three axle tractor units available
with steel front and rear air suspension, or alternatively with
all-round air suspension. A range of three axle rigid versions is
also available.
