Breffni Plant Hire raises the bar

An all encompassing list of modern plant and machinery, competitive pricing, unrivalled levels of customer service and an ability to move with the times have been the cornerstones of Breffni Plant Hire Ltd’s success for more than three decades.

Part of the fleet

Sean and Annette Flynn, of Leitrim and Cavan respectively established the appropriately named Breffni Plant Hire Ltd in 1971. Down through the years, the company has built up an impressive customer list in both the public and private sectors.

Nowadays the company works for the various county councils in Dublin and surrounding counties as well as Iarnrod Eireann, the Office of Public Works and a host of building and civil engineering contractors throughout the country.

While the bulk of the company’s work would be located in the greater Dublin area, Breffni Plant Hire is ready, willing and able to carry out projects throughout Ireland.

The company is involved in a myriad of activities including plant hire, site clearance, landscaping, construction, demolition and rail works.
Like many of its peers in the plant hire sector, part of Breffni Plant Hire’s success can be attributed to the boom in the construction sector in Dublin since the early 1990s. However, the company played a huge part in moulding its own destiny.

The company has been able to expand into numerous areas that can all be pulled in under the loose heading of plant hire. Of equal importance is the fact that this expansion has been achieved while complying with all relevant legislation governing the various sector the company has entered.

Another vital ingredient in the company’s success is it staff, which number upwards on 70 people. Breffni Plant Hire prides itself on having a relatively low turnover of staff. “A lot of the staff have been between 10 and 15 years service with the company, while many more would be with us for at least five years. We feel our staff are one of our biggest assets,” Sean explained.

Throughout the company from administration to machine and lorry operators to general operatives, Breffni Plant Hire has an experienced, well trained and customer friendly staff intent on delivering high levels of customer service. “All our staff are equally important to us. They are all part of the same chain leading to a successful company and they have important roles to play with in the company,” he added.
To facilitate the smooth running of operations, the company utilises an extensive list of plant and machinery comprising of artic and tipper trucks, track and mobile excavators, dozers and dump trucks along with a range of smaller plant items.

Right across the company’s entire plant and machinery list, Breffni Plant Hire has a mixture of new equipment, which is complemented by well-maintained older stock. “You can’t replace every machine every year, which means you will have a certain amount of older equipment. Having said that we are constantly upgrading our equipment,” Sean revealed.

“The advantage of running modern equipment is that you don’t have breakdowns. Downtime in this business is crucial. Many of our machines would be working in tandem with each other. You just could not afford to have labour and machinery idle for a lengthy duration because one machine is broken-down on a particular site,” he added.

In order to keep the fleet in tip-top condition, the company has a well-apportioned workshop in North Dublin where an experienced crew of fitters along with Service Manager Ken maintain the entire plant and machinery stock. Much of the work the fitters undertake would be preventative maintenance.

The workshop crew’s lot is made that little bit easier by virtue of the fact that the company carries a spare machine in each category be that a tipper truck, track and mobile excavator, dozer or dump truck. “That means our fitters can take a machine in and give it the once over before any such breakdown can occur,” Sean added.

Sean is acutely aware that maintenance and repairs are costly, whether they are conducted “In house” or by a third party. But the company’s excellent preventative maintenance programme means breakdowns are the exeption rather than the norm. “In the unlikely event of a breakdown we can provide a replacement machine to any site with the utmost efficiency, which makes for peace of mind,” he remarked.

Since the turn of the last century, companies working in the construction sector reported a general slowdown in the industry however this has not adversely affected Breffni Plant Hire. “That is down to our reputation for giving high levels of service using quality plant and equipment manned by experienced staff. Price will always be an important consideration, with our rates being extremely competitive however a quality service is as important within the construction industry in the 21st century,” he commented.

Sean concluded: “In the construction industry if your not going forward your falling backwards and you can fall behind in a matter of weeks, not years. So you have to be flexible and move with the times. In that respect we are continually looking to the future.”
