Since its establishment in 2003, Carrickboy Quarries Ltd in Carrickboy, Co. Longford has earned a reputation for quality, reliability and value-for-money.
Founded by brothers Albert and Dermot Manning, Carrickboy Quarries has firmly established as one of the midlands’ leading suppliers of crushed rock and stone. The company’s success can be gauged from the fact that it operates 12 tipper and four articulated trucks, and counts such reputable building firms as Ascon and John Sisk & Son Ltd among its ever-expanding list of customers.

“We’ve made good strides over the past four years and hopefully we’ll continue to grow,” says Gary Reilly, manager of Carrickboy Quarries.
“The building boom helped to get us established and we’ve been kept very busy because of that. Farmers are also very good customers of ours and they account for a large percentage of our business. As a way of showing how much we appreciate their business, we recently sponsored the Longford Ploughing Championship.”
Hailing from Newtownforbes, Albert and Dermot Manning have a strong background in quarrying. Gary explains: “Their father Al used to have a quarry in Longford so they know the business inside out.”

The brothers operate a large quarry in Carrickboy, which is located on the Edgeworthstown-Ballymahon Road near Abbeyshrule. Carrickboy Quarries supplies a wide range of high quality crushed stone, including 804 and all graded chips at the keenest rates.
Crushed stone can be used for ground works, roadways, driveways, paths and much more. It’s durable, virtually maintenance free, reasonably priced, and available from Carrickboy Quarries in a variety of sizes for different applications. The company offers an excellent delivery service, while ex-pit transaction is another option for customers.
“The pit in Carrickboy is bigger than most and I would say there is at least 10 years left in it. There is enough stone in it to keep us going for a while yet,” Gary says.

Carrickboy Quarries Ltd boasts an impressive customer base in and around the midland towns of Mullingar, Longford, Athlone and Roscommon. Among the construction and civil engineering companies availing of its service are: John Craddock Ltd: John Sisk & Son Ltd; Woodlock Developments; Blackriver Developments; Buckley Construction; KDM Construction; Ascon and BCS Homes. “We’re extremely busy due to the large amount of development in the midlands area. At the moment, we’re supplying stone to new housing developments in Edgeworthstown, Athlone, Longford and Ballymahon.
“Blackriver Developments from Enfield are building 100 houses in Edgeworthstown, BCS Homes are building 200 houses at Stone Park in Longford, while Buckley Construction from Athlone are working on another 100-house scheme in Ballymahon, and we have the contract for those developments.”
Carrickboy Quarries are also supplying stone to the latest phase of the new N6 dual carriageway between Kilbeggan and Athlone. The project, which is being carried out by Ascon, stretches some 29km and continues on from the Kinnegad to Kilbeggan phase which between them, will provide a total of almost 57km of quality national road. The dual carriageway is also the key east-west axis providing the major inter-urban route from Dublin to Galway.

The construction of a new bypass on the Strokestown side of Longford was commissioned recently and Carrickboy Quarries hopes to supply the stone to that particular contract. “We’ll definitely be tendering for that,” Gary reveals.
DAF is the preferred choice of truck of Carrickboy Quarries. “We have 12 tippers, the majority of which are new, and all of them are DAF. We also have four artics and three of them are DAF with the other being a Scania. Over the years, we have found DAF to be that bit more reliable and economical. They aren’t as hard on the juice,” he adds.
Carrickboy’s fleet colours are red and white. “All our trucks have a red body and white cab. They’re fairly distinctive colours.”
Albert and Dermot Manning also own two other companies – Manning Bros Plant and M&S Plant Spares. Both of these businesses operate from Goshen, Edgesworthstown, which is just a short distance from the quarry in Carrickboy.
