Westplant Contracts - for all your transport requirements

Westplant Contracts boasts an impressive fleet of trucks and vans

Westplant Contracts Ltd is a thriving company based in Roscommon town specialising in transport, civil engineering and plant hire. It is part of the Doran Bros group which was set up nine years ago by brothers Davy and Tommy Doran whose background is in plant maintenance.

Since its establishment in 1998, Doran Bros has grown from a small plant hire business into a major concern specialising in transport and construction among other things.
Doran Bros is now divided into two different companies, namely Westplant Contracts Ltd and Carrowroe Properties Ltd. As well as being licenced hauliers, Westplant specialises in plant hire/sales, civil engineering and site excavation work. Carrowroe Properties is a property development company which has carries out prestigious housing developments. Between the two companies, a 30-strong staff is employed.

“Our business has evolved over the years,” explains Davy Doran, who co-founded Doran Bros along with his brother Tommy.
“Both Tommy and I have a background in plant machinery and maintenance and we started off with the plant hire business. We got into excavation work after that and the other businesses grew from there.
“Because Westplant and Carrowroe Properties compliment each other, we are not reliant on other transport companies when we are constructing houses. We use our own tipper trucks and also avail of our civil engineering service,” he adds.
Westplant Contracts Ltd has established a tradition of value-for-money and total dedication to customer service. “Our aim is to provide a professional, on time, safe service to the construction and freight industry. We are proud of our reputation for reliability, value-for-money and excellence. We are recognised as a one-stop shop for all your transport needs and offer a 24-hour nationwide service,” Davy says.

Westplant are licenced international hauliers and are also licenced waste collectors for the West of Ireland. The company boasts a modern fleet of Scania trucks, registered between 2005 and 2007, and also counts 8x4 tipper trailers, 6x2 tractor units, among its extensive range of machinery and plant.
“We’ve invested a lot of money in new trucks over the years in order to provide the most reliable service possible for our customers. We offer a complete transport service in Ireland and the UK. We can transport machinery to and from the UK weighing up to 50 tonnes.”
All of Westplant’s trucks are serviced and repaired at the company’s state-of-the-art workshop just outside Roscommon town on the Athlone Road. Davy is fulsome in his praise of his highly skilled and experienced staff which has undoubtedly contributed to the company’s success.

“We are fortunate to have an excellent staff consisting of drivers, mechanics and administration personnel. Our mechanics have attended various courses in order keep up to the speed with the changes in technology and to further their knowledge. We run a preventative maintenance programme on all our trucks.”
Westplant has an impressive customer base with numerous companies from all over Ireland availing of their transport, excavating, civil engineering and plant hire services. Westplant carried out all the groundwork on the new Athlone Town Centre, the ESB Power Stations in Lanesboro and Shannonbridge, Tesco, Roscommon and Lidl, Roscommon.

Davy and Tommy are constantly striving to improve their business and to lessen the cost burden on their customers. In this regard, the brothers have undertaken a feasibility study to test how the use of biofuel would impact on their transport business.
They are growing their own rapeseed which can be used as a biofuel. Biofuel is any fuel with an 80 per cent minimum content by volume of materials derived from such crops as rapeseed and, unlike other natural resources such as petroleum and coal, is a renewable energy source.

“The rise in diesel prices and the environmental impact has forced us and others to look at environment friendly ways to run our trucks. If we also cut down on our fuel costs by using biofuel, we will be able to pass the savings onto our customers,” Davy says.
“Like every other transport company in the country, we are trying to keep our costs down. We are always trying to think up of ways to utilize our trucks better and to get more backloads. The last thing we want is to have a situation where our trucks are going around empty.”
Currently, Westplant Contracts is offering a complete package to farmers who may be availing of grants to construct slatted sheds, horse stables, concrete yards of silo slabs. All works are carried out to grant approved standards and specifications with the keenest quotations given.

“We are able to see any development job through from start to finish. We have the expertise and the machinery to do any job. Our range of machinery includes tipper trucks, dump trucks, dozers, diggers and much more. We can carry out the ground works and the building works. In short, we offer the complete service.”
Westplant Contracts’ sister company, Carrowroe Properties, recently commenced the second phase of a large development of luxury houses at Oldwood, which is situated between the General Hospital and Golf Club in Roscommon. The first phase of the development consisted of 57 homes which were quickly sold out.

“In setting up Carrowroe, we decided to separate the plant and transport business (Westplant) from the construction company. We build houses that are at the higher end of the market for which there is always a good demand,” Davy concludes.
