A speedy service

It is human nature for people to want something as soon as they order a package and J.P. Transpeed can offer a fast efficient service to its large customer base in the Midlands.

For the past seven years, the Co. Laois based firm has been delivering goods all over the country and J.P. Transpeed has grown considerably during the intervening period.
The company was established by Paddy Bergin and Tom Lawless. Both men spoke to Irish Trucker about the success of the business and what the future held for them.

Operating from its premise in Portlaoise, the company provide a nationwide haulage and courier service, while recently the business has diversified into warehousing also.
“Myself and Tom used to work with Midland Hauliers and then we decided to go on our own. Both of us had a good background in the industry, but it was hard work at first to get the company off the ground,” said Paddy.
“We specialise in fast freight and concentrate on transporting dry goods, while we also move a small bit of chemical goods, usually paint. We offer a next day service to our customers and we have built up a reputation of being reliable and efficient, which is of the utmost importance in this business.

“Over the years we have built up a large customer base and it is important to keep all the clients happy, which we seem to be doing and that is something we aim to continue.”
Tom revealed that the company initially operated as a courier service, before they decided to invest in some trucks and the business has gone from strength to strength ever since.
J.P Transpeed's policy for customer care has seen their business stand the test of time and indeed they have moved with the times to keep ahead of their rivals in the haulage industry.
Their fleet is kept in pristine condition so to avoid unnecessary breakdowns, while delivering or collecting goods. All maintenance work is carried out in-house and the trucks are kept well serviced.

“There are now five trucks on the road as we have two artics and three rigids, all of which are Volvo, which we find to be the most reliable trucks on the road and there is a two year warranty on them from McCarthy’s in Kilkenny, who we deal with all the time.
“The vans are all sprinters and this cuts down on the maintenance work as we don’t want any of the vehicles sitting on the side of the road broken down. The trucks and vans are traded in on regular basis to keep the fleet fairly fresh.
“There are plenty of overheads in this business and it is important to avoid all unnecessary costs that is why I service all the vans myself,” said Tom

Last year saw the construction of offices at Cullohill, while three months ago J.P. Transpeed invested in a warehouse on the outskirts of the town.
“The warehouse has been kept busy and we currently store goods for Kelgin Tiles here in the town. We also have a big site to develop and intend starting work on that in the New Year.”
J.P. Transpeed operates throughout the 26 counties, but Paddy revealed that they had an agreement with another firm to cover the South of Ireland.

“There is an agreement in place with Toga Freight who are based in Dublin south and they look after whatever work we get down there, while in turn we do work they maybe contracted to do in the midlands.
“It works out well for both of us and it is something that we are keen to continue in the future and I can see no reason why that won’t happen.” The haulage industry can be a very fickle business and one that can change at a moments notice. Paddy acknowledges this fact and believes that the quality of service provided has to be second to none.
“There are many companies working in this industry and one wrong move could see a business fold, which is unfortunate, but that’s the way things are. We have to ensure that we continue to provide a top quality service to our customers. The increase in fuel has hit most operators, but you just have to continue working hard.”

The company is dedicated to meeting the customer’s haulage requirements, meaning on time delivery at a very competitive rate. Their rapid expansion reflects in the amount of work that the company are involved in at the present time and they will continue to provide their customers with a reliable and quality service.
Tom concluded: “We’ve expanded to a level we’re comfortable with. We have good customers and we’re very happy with them. Expansion is justified if any of our existing customers expanded and we generated additional work through that.”

There is no question that J.P. Transpeed has the determination and dedication to succeed at whatever area they apply themselves in. Since 2000, the company has shown that with some hard work and efficiency, they can achieve their goals and they look set to continue that trend for some time to come.
