A new venture

Having established a stellar reputation for itself since its inception over a decade ago, P.F. Dixon Plant Hire has just embarked on a significant new venture with the establishment in July 2009 of OMD Waste Recycling Ltd. Irish Trucker visited the Enfield base to take a closer look at the new company and examine its status within the greater scheme of things.

The yard is well-stocked

Since its genesis in the late 1990s, P.F. Dixon Plant Hire has forged an unrivalled reputation as one of Ireland’s leading operators in haulage, site clearance, excavation and demolition. July 2009 is a watershed month in the family business’ history as a second company has been formed to look after the recycling work generated by the core business.
OMD Waste Recycling is a stand-alone business but will have the same dependable, reliable, professional traits that Dixon’s clients have availed of for over ten years.

Administration manager Joan Quinlan notes: “We’re ready to hit the ground running as we’ve been planning this recycling company for a long time. We’re delighted that the planning permission has finally come through and we’re able to get things up and running at last.”
So what services will OMD Waste Recycling provide? In what way will the new company complement the existing one? “It’s basically a construction and demolition (C&D) waste recycling facility. We had an old sand and gravel pit here and we built the new facility on that site. The recycling will be mainly based on skip hire and we’ll generate a lot of that waste ourselves through our other operations with P.F. Dixon, but we will also provide a recycling service to other companies. We’re able to recycle rubbish from any large building projects, from small skips to roll-on, roll-off.”

Everything is in place to ensure a smooth, efficient and cost-effective service, as Joan continues: “We are in an ideal position in that we also have two land reclamation sites, which are to be restored back to farming land. They take soil and stone, and we can bring that waste there ourselves. The two companies do obviously complement each other as recycling and construction and demolition go hand in hand, but they are separate companies.”
In tough economic times, OMD Waste Recycling will generate employment in the Enfield area – a welcome boast for the beleaguered community. “There will be ten or twelve new jobs created once the facility is fully up and running,” Joan confirms. “This isn’t something we’ve just pulled out of the hat. We’d been seeking the planning permission for seven years and we have all our research done and we know the market thoroughly. We understand the importance of recycling and we’re determined to divert as much waste from landfill as we possibly can.

“Of course, we’re still going strong in plant hire and that will continue to be the main company,” Joan concludes. “But we’re generating a lot of waste and we want to recycle that ourselves rather than allowing it to go to landfill. We can take on jobs now that we’ve had to turn down in the past because we can provide more competitive quotes now that we don’t have to pay landfill charges.”
