Access success

With a strong record in the Dublin commercial waste sector and special offers including a free compost bin for new residential waste customers in County Wicklow, Access Waste Recycling is leading the way on the east coast.

Access Waste Recycling has more than
30 years experience

Access Waste Recycling has more than 30 years of experience in the waste sector, having started trading as Lawlor Brothers, founded by Michael and Francis, in the late 1970s.
The company has continued to flourish in the intervening three decades, growing from modest beginnings in the Liberties area of Dublin to its impressive new headquarters at the JFK Industrial Estate on the Naas Road, all the time forging a reputation as one of the most reliable firms in the capital’s commercial waste industry.

Commercial customers can take advantage of the full range of wheelie bins either for mixed waste or for recycling, as well as skips for all other wastes from small mini skips to large roll-on 35 cubic yard skips.
All in all, the company has evolved into something which is scarcely recognisable from that which first saw the light of day under Michael and Francis in 1978, and there are few signs that such progress will not be sustained in the coming years.
Not that the success story stops with the commercial sector: Access Waste Recycling made the move into the area of residential waste in neighbouring Wicklow in 2006 and with significant investment equipping their vehicles with all the latest state-of-the-art equipment, the company continues to establish itself as a strong presence in a very competitive market.

Access has a strong name in the skip hire market

Believing firmly in the ‘Polluter-Pays’ principle, Access Waste’s residential services operate on a pay-by-weight system, in which each bin is weighed and the customer charged only for the waste that is collected, rather than the number of collections. Director Niall Lawlor says, “More than any other system, pay-by-weight encourages the customer to recycle more and keep waste out of the black bin, thus offering a more cost effective option”. In conjunction with this system, Access are now offering a free home composting bin to new pay-by-weight customers. “Home composting is the most sustainable way to dispose of organic materials such as peelings, hedge clippings and other kitchen and garden waste and can offer 20-30% reductions in the weight of your black bin.”

John Crennan, hailing from Wicklow Town, has spearheaded the expansion of Access Waste’s residential services in the county. He says, “We have seen our customer base, both commercial and residential, expand rapidly over the last three years. The reliability of our service and focus on customer satisfaction has been the strength behind our growth.” The scope of Access Waste’s residential services has recently been extended into Arklow and surrounding areas.

To suit all customers, the company also offer alternative price plans to their pay by-weight system, including pay-by-lift, bags and tags.

Environmental Protection
In all its endeavours, Access Waste places the utmost emphasis on environmental protection, extending beyond simply waste reduction. The company employs a detailed Environmental Management System to control the environmental impact of their waste activities. This system was recently accredited to the rigorous international ISO14001 standard and is something that will develop with the company.

Environmental officer, Robert Kane, says, “Waste management is an essential process but it is also imperative that it is carried out in a responsible manner that won’t end up costing the environment. With markets becoming more competitive, many companies may ignore environmental protection in the name of financial constraints, but we believe that maintaining our environmental management plan is essential to good business.”

The company has now started to focus on energy reductions at its materials recovery facility, and in its fleet of collection vehicles. An ECOdrive initiative has recently been started to promote fuel efficient driving amongst the company drivers, both in work and at home. Robert says, “Transport is obviously a huge part of our services, and so if we can improve the fuel efficiency across the fleet, this will go along way to reducing our impact on resource use and the environment. The ECOdrive initiative is the simplest first step in improving fuel efficiency and has the added bonus that these habits can be used by all employees in their own lives too.”
