Doheny Wheelie Bins goes from strength to strength

For over 60 years, Doheny Wheelie Bins & Recycling Ltd has been providing a quality service to its ever-expanding customer-base in the south-east and midlands. Martin Doheny explains more.

DohenyÕs is one of the leading independently-owned waste management and recycling companies in the south-east and midlands

The opening of a new state-of-the-art waste transfer station and office marks the latest chapter in the success story that is Doheny Wheelie Bins & Recycling Ltd.
Based in Castleinch, Callan Road, Kilkenny, the company has long been regarded as one of the leading independently-owned waste management and recycling companies in the south-east and midlands. Doheny’s provides a full domestic, commercial and industrial waste collection and disposal service, and also specialises in skip hire and recycling.

“We are committed to providing a top-class service to all our customers,” stresses Martin Doheny, who heads up the long-established family-run concern.
“We’ve been in the waste disposal business for over 60 years – since the 1940s – so we have a lot of experience behind us. We’ve invested heavily in the business down the years and will shortly be opening a new transfer station and office which will give us further impetus going forward,” he adds.

The company has been trading under Doheny Wheelie Bins & Recycling since the mid-1990s, but the business goes back a lot further than that as Martin explains: “My grandfather, Martin, set up it and then my father, also Martin, took over from him. We got into the wheelie bins in 1989, when we took over Kilkenny County Council’s run, and the recycling business followed five years later.

“We’ve expanded to the stage where we now have about 25 staff and 20 trucks. Myself and my brothers John and David now run the business. As a family-run business, we pride ourselves on being able to offer customers the personal touch.”
In late 2003, Kilkenny County Council launched a kerbside recycling scheme in conjunction with Doheny Wheelie Bins & Recycling Ltd. The scheme is a key element in the South-East Waste Management Plan and ensures that all householders who have refuse collection in the county have a kerbside collection of recyclables to divert waste from landfill.

Under the scheme, all customers are required to place dry recyclables in a special blue bin or blue bag for collection on alternate weeks. Likewise, the ordinary black bin refuse is collected every second week.
Customers must pay particular attention to the list of dry recyclables that are accepted. The list of dry recyclables which can be placed in the blue bins and bags are as follows: newspapers and magazines; light cardboard packaging - cereal boxes
cartons, juice and milk cartons etc; plastic bottles, mineral, water and milk bottles;
aluminium drink cans and food cans.

Doheny Waste Bins & Recycling has been providing a quality service for over 60 years

Food waste, nappies and other mixed wastes are not permitted in the recycling sacks. Other wastes that are not suitable for recycling include: textiles, plastic bags, light bulbs/ batteries, any type of household hazardous waste, aerosols, medical wastes or DIY waste.
Organic waste is available to our commercial customers at present with further plans to provide the same service to domestic customers.
Doheny Wheelie Bins & Recycling Ltd. hold waste collection permits for a host of local authorities, including Kilkenny, Carlow, Wexford, Waterford, South Tipperary, Laois, North Tipperary, Longford, Westmeath and Offaly County Councils. The company’s waste permit numbers are: WMPI/2002 and WCP/103.

“Our aim is to provide a reliable, efficient and affordable service, and do our bit for the environment as well. We must reduce our reliance on landfill by delivering alternative infrastructure and by reducing the quality of waste we generate in the first place. We are passionate about recycling and are here to help with your recycling needs,” Martin says.
The company’s domestic service is availed of by thousands of homes in Kilkenny city and county, while it also provides a similar service to commercial businesses in the region. With more routes and pick-up points than ever before, households and businesses throughout the county can now subscribe to the service at a very competitive price.

DohenyÕs headquarters are on the Callan Road in Kilkenny

Doheny’s provides a comprehensive service to its domestic, commercial and industrial waste customers. The company offers a large range of services for all its existing and new customers from the smaller domestic bins to large bins and, of course, recycling.
These are exciting times for Doheny Wheelie Bins & Recycling Ltd. with the opening of its new state-of-the-art transfer station which represents a significant investment in the company’s future. A transfer station is a facility for the temporary deposition of recyclable wastes. In this case, baled cardboard and plastic will be stored before being removed by truck to Panda Waste (formerly Smurfit’s) for recycling.
Martin pays tribute to his 25-strong staff, who comprise drivers, maintenance and office personnel.

“We are very lucky to have such highly-skilled and qualified staff working for us. Our drivers are extremely reliable. Each and every one of our staff have played their part in the company’s success to date.”
In conclusion, Martin says: “The waste management and recycling business has changed dramatically down through the years with the result that there are countless regulations to be complied with. We know this business better than most and aim to continue to provide a quality service for many years to come.”
