High tech cameras points the way

Truckers who jump red lights will face the prospect of having two penalty points added to their licence thanks to a network of sophisticated cameras that will be installed at all major junctions in the capital in the coming months.

Dublin’s Director of Traffic Owen Keegan said yesterday, 5th November that the new camera network will be installed at key junctions and will be used by gardai to prosecute offenders. However, this will only happen when the penalty points system is fully operational next year.

The high-tech camera reads the registration plate of the vehicle breaking the red light sequence and stores the information to be used at a later date. One test camera located at the Con Colbert / Islandbridge junction detected more than 40,000 motorists breaking the red light during the test period.
