Proposed Westmeath landfill site rejected

Celtic Waste, part of the NTR group of companies has been refused planning permission to build a super dump in Co Westmeath.

An Bord Pleanala rejected the company’s plan to locate the dump at Annaskinnan, two miles from Killucan and Kinnegad. The company said the dump would would have an operating life of 10 years and would be able to accept 175,000 tonnes of waste per year.

The proposed landfill site was refused planning permission by Westmeath County Council last November, but the company appealed that decision to An Bord Pleanala.
An Bord Pleanala rejected the application, citing the sheer size of the project and the resulting negative impact it would have on the local environment.

Unacceptable levels of noise and traffic, and increased numbers of scavenging birds and rodents were among the reasons for refusing the landfill development.
