Dublin traffic calming measures are saving lives in
Dublin
The introduction of traffic calming measures by Dublin City Council has
reduced road fatalities by 50 per cent, according to statistics just released.
A study just released shows the number of road fatalities in Dublin has
been reduced from 53 in 1997 to 26 in 2000. The largest reduction was
amongst pedestrians falling from 30 in 1997 to nine in 2000.
The number of cyclists killed fell from six to just two in the same period.
Dublin City Councils senior executive engineer for traffic, Donal
Matthews states in his report that the introduction of traffic calming
measures was the main reason for the reduction in road fatalities.
An increase in the number of traffic signs, road markings, bollards, chicanes
and ramps and the introduction of restrictions on heavy goods vehicles
in certain areas had all contributed to the reduction, Mr Matthews
