Trucker tells court he was not at fault
A Co Dublin truck driver has told Dublin City Coroners's Court that he
was not at fault for a road accident which claimed the lives of four Bosnians
in September 2001.
Brian McLoughlin, from Skerries said he saw a car coming around a bend
about 40 yards ahead of him before the collision occurred.
He told the court he slowed his vehicle and pulled into the left-hand
side of the road but to his "amazement" the other driver did
not take evasive action. "As far as I am concerned I am not responsible
in any way for this accident as the other driver was travelling at speed
in the middle of the road."
Garda Stephen Keane told the court there appeared to be no road signs
in the area at the time of the accident. Signs warning about the width
of the road and the speed limit have since been erected.
The jury returned verdicts of accidental death in each case and asked
the Coroner Dr. Brian Farrell to write to Fingal County Council to recommend
road markings and road widening where the fatal accident took place.
The four Bosnians, who lived in the Blanchardstown area were on their
way to Rush, where they worked on a farm, picking potatoes.
