Tyrone man calls for crash barrier on “dangerous road”

A Cookstown man has called for crash barriers to be erected on the Tulnacross Road after a second person was killed on local roads in less than a week.

Ernie Black, who was one of the first people on the scene after a car driven by an elderly Killyclogher man left the Tulnacross Road and ended up in Mr Black’s field.
John McManus, 82, was the second person to die on the roads in the Cookstown district in less than a week. The Vauxhall Corsa he was driving mounted a grass verge and tumbled down an embankment of around 12 feet.

Mr Black said several vehicles have ended up in the field after failing to negotiate the corner on Tulnacross Road, close to the Montober Road junction, four miles from Cookstown.
“Nine cars went over into that field in the past seven years,” he said. “ There was an accident here about three years ago and there was a man badly hurt, while others received minor injuries.”

Following the most recent accident, Mr Black said he had raised the matter with the Roads Service local section office, where he found the staff helpful. He added that recommendations had been forwarded to the traffic branch.
