West Midlands fire brigade - new access platform from
Stertil UK
Terry Danks, the Workshop Manager of West Midlands Fire Service workshops
at Perry Barr in Birmingham, recently approached Ian Gibbs, Area Sales
Manager for Stertil UK to come up with an idea which would satisfy current
Health and safety criteria for working at heights around fire service
vehicles. His particular problem concerned the safety of his staff whilst
involved in the removal of the centrally mounted water tanks from his
fleet of fire tenders.
In conjunction with the workshop engineering staff, Stertil UK designed
and manufactured a sectional aluminium scaffold system, which is both
lightweight and user friendly. An innovative, bespoke design was required
due to the fact that a standard aluminium scaffold was either too high,
too late, or too wide for their particular application.
The system, which wraps around the rear and sides of the vehicle, includes
full-length safety rails, non-slip surfaces, lockable castors, a ladder
to an hydraulically damped access hatch in the platform floor, an air
supply and cross bracings for stability.
On delivery and commissioning, Steve McCormick, the Principal Workshop
Technician said of the scaffold system. "It far exceeds our expectations,
and I can instantly see other applications where this system could be
used within our workshop environment." Terry Danks stated that it
woudl give the engineering staff more confidence when carrying out work
at heights, it would increase the workshop's efficiency and of course,
would minimise the risk of any accidents or injury.
