Inquest hears of tragic death

An inquest into the tragic death of a young truck driver from County Louth has heard how he lost his life after being caught between two articulated trailers.

The inquest at Dublin City Coroner’s Court heard how Gavin Grills from Dundalk lost his life after collecting a trailer at Dublin Port’s Irish Ferries terminal in August 2002.

The deceased was attaching a registration plate to the back of his own trailer when another trailer unit became disconnected from its cab and careered into him.

The driver of the other vehicle insisted that he followed all correct procedures but that while he was attempting to connect the trailer to his cab unit, it rolled down an incline towards the young Dundalk man, who had his back turned some 8-14 feet away.

Mr Grills received fatal injuries when trapped between the two trailers.
The jury returned a verdict of accidental death, while further recommending that ground supervision of trucks at Dublin Port be applied at all times.
