Traffic lights to cost Eur300,000

The erection of traffic lights at the junction of Tesco’s and McDonald’s in Newbridge, Co. Kildare will cost an estimated Eur300,000, Kildare area Councillors were told at a recent meeting.

Local politiciians have stressed that the lights are essential for safety reasons as the busy junction has become dangerous and although no serious accident has yet occured, there is a likely chance that one may occur.

The work will involve linking the new lights with the existing ones at Langton Cross and at the Dunnes Stores junction. It is still not determined who will pay for the new lights but Kildare Area Councillors have been told Tesco will be asked to make a substantial contribution.

County Engineer Jimmy Lynch told the June meeting of the Kildare Area Committee of Kildare County Council that consultant engineers, working for Tesco, have drawn up contract documents for the project and the scheme, will soon go to tender. He added the total cost will be between Eur200,000 and Eur300,000.
