McDaid announces ban on super cube trailers

The Department of Transport is set to ban co-called super cube trailers from the country’s roads.

Junior Minister at the Department of Transport Dr. Jim McDaid has confirmed that a maximum height restriction of 4.65 metres will be placed on all trailers operating in Ireland.

The ban will come into force to coincide with official confirmation that the height restriction at Dublin Port Tunnel won’t be increased to 4.9 metres to accommodate so-called super cube trailers.

Dr. McDaid said the decision to ban trailers in excess of 4.65 metres had been taken on road safety and environmental reasons. He said a “catastrophe” on Irish roads was inevitable unless super cube trailers were banned.

“They have gone higher and higher and are carrying light loads. You can see them swaying in the wind. It is inevitable that there is going to be a catastrophe on our roads. It is only a matter of time,” he warned.
