Super cube ban is asinine - Quinn

A leading member of the Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA) has described the Department of Transport’s decision to ban so-called super cube trailers as “asinine” given the fact that the National Roads Authority (NRA) is building new bridges with a height clearance of five metres.

Junior Minister at the Department of Transport Dr. Jim McDaid has confirmed that a maximum height restriction of 4.65 metres will be placed on all trailers operating in Ireland.

The ban will come into force to coincide with official confirmation that the height restriction at Dublin Port Tunnel won’t be increased to 4.9 metres to accommodate so-called super cube trailers.

IRHA communications director Jimmy Quinn said ferries operating out of Dublin Port had a minimum height clearance of five metres, while the NRA was building bridges on the national road network with a similar height clearance, so it didn’t make sense to restrict trailers to 4.65 metres.
