NRA backs super truck ban plan
The National Roads Authority has backed the Department of Transports
proposed ban on so-called super trucks.
NRA corporate affairs manager Michael Egan warned of a threat of super
trucks overturning on exposed stretches of road such as the M50.
Mr Egan also said that trucks had smashed into 450 bridges in the past
five years and there was a risk of a major derailment.
Mr Egan said he shared the safety concerns about an inevitable catastrophe
on a road involving a super truck.
There is a risk that they could be toppled. We echo the ministers
concerns. A bridge strike could result in the railway track being moved
leading possibly to the derailment of a train. There is a risk out there
that we cannot tolerate indefinitely into the future, the NRA chief
claimed.
