New height restrictions in the pipeline

The Department of Transport is set to introduce a new maximum height restriction for lorries and trailers entering the State.

Transport Minister Seamus Brennan has all but conceded that the operating height at the Dublin Port Tunnel wouldn’t be increased from 4.65 metres to 4.9 metres because of safety fears.

It now seems likely that the Department will bring in a new height restriction of 4.6 metres in line with the height clearance within the tunnel.

“Around Europe it is 4.2 metres. The odd country has 4.7 metres or 4.8 metres. 4.6 metres seems to be about right in the middle,” Minister Brennan commented.
