Callelly is ready to sort out truck height issue
Junior Minister at the Department of Transport, Ivor Callelly has vowed
to sort out the truck height issue as a matter of urgency.
The Junior Minister made his comments following revelations that a truck,
which crashed into the Rathcoole flyover on the N7 in September, caused
more than E1 million worth of damage to the structure.
The deck of the bridge was damaged when it was struck from underneath
by a high-side truck. South Dublin County Council is offering a E10,000
reward for information leading to the driver being identified.
The bridge was closed to the public from Monday(November 29) and will
remain closed for up to six weeks to allow repairs to be carried out.
Last night the National Roads Authority (NRA) confirmed there was a very
real threat of the bridge collapsing onto the Dublin Cork road.
NRA spokesman Michael Egan said: You could not rule out something
happening there. Thats why we put the weight restrictions on the
bridge. It is a serious safety issue. We cannot defer repairing the bridge.
Two lanes of traffic have been closed on the N7 to facilitate the repairs.
Long delays for both northbound and southbound traffic are expected.
