Politician eyes more heavy traffic

A Sligo politician has forecast a major increase in the number of heavy vehicles using roads in the Yeats County following the announcement of a freight yard closure by Iarnrod Eireann.

Sligo Mayor Alderman Declan Bree made his prediction in the light of the news that Iarnrod Eireann has closed its freight yard in Sligo after 140 years, with the loss of five jobs.

A spokesman for the company said the service had not been economically viable for some time, but the pulp wood and fast track services would continue.
