Quarry strike is settled

A strike by more than 300 quarry workers in the west of Ireland has been settled, after their employers Frank Harrington Ltd, offered a 20 per cent pay increase.

Upwards on 300 workers walked off the job on Monday (April 18) at a number of quarry facilities owned by Frank Harrington Ltd in counties Mayo, Galway and Sligo in a dispute over rates of pay.

The affected plants were in Kilkelly and Castlebar in Co. Mayo, Claregalway in Co. Galway and Ballysodare in Co. Sligo.
The workers included truck and digger operators, machine operators, welders, steel fabricators and administrative staff.

A workers’ spokesman said on Tuesday (19th April) that they had voted to call off their action after they were offered a 20 per cent pay increase, having previously rejected earlier offers.
