Ireland could become a dumping ground for sub-standard truck and car tyres,
the Oireachtas Committee on Transport has heard.
The Committee heard that Ireland is the only EU country apart from Greece
that allows tyres that do not conform to EU standards.
Committee chairman John Ellis TD said that tyres bearing the EU mark are
being sold at a 20 per cent premium above those without the E-mark.
A spokesman for the Department of Transport told the committee that there
is no legal requirement for re-treaded or second hand tyres to conform
to EU standards.
