Department of Transport stalls on fish eye legislation
The Department of Transport is refusing to rush through legislation making
it illegal for heavy goods vehicles to operate, without so-called fish
eye mirrors, ahead of a EU Directive, which is set to come into
force in 2007.
Junior Minister Ivor Callely says a number of European countries have
run into legal difficulties after bringing forward legislation
ahead of the EU Directive, which makes it mandatory for fish eye mirrors
to be fitted on all new trucks.
Callely says a major road safety campaign, alerting pedestrians to the
dangers of blind spots on HGVs will take place over the summer.
He is also calling on hauliers to fit the blind spot mirrors
on a voluntary basis.
