Lagan plans to incinerate bone meal
One of Irelands leading cement producers is planning to substitute
nearly half its coal requirements with meat and bone meal.
Lagan Cement, which operates a cement plant and two quarries near Kinnegad
in Co. Meath, is planning to incinerate meat and bone meal to fire the
kilns, which produce the cement.
A spokesman for the company said an Environmental Impact Statement produced
by the company formed part of the research the company had undertaken
as part of its obligations to reduce the use of fossil fuels under the
Kyoto Protocol.
Meath County Council and the Environment Protection Agency said on Thursday
(April 21) that they were unaware of the companys plans.
