Hauliers call for voluntary fitting of fish eye mirrors

The Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA) has called on all transport operators to fit so-called fish eye mirrors on all their vehicles in a bid to halt spiralling pedestrian fatalities.

The IRHA is urging all hauliers to fit the extended mirrors, which can be purchased for as little as E40 as part of a wider campaign to inform pedestrians of the “blind spots” on HGVs.

A European Directive, which will come into force in 2007, which make the mirrors a legal requirement on new trucks. All trucks will have to be fitted with the mirrors by 2008.

However, the IRHA wants hauliers to move now to fit the mirrors. “these mirrors can make an important contribution to road safety and we would urge all hauliers to fit the mirrors as a matter of urgency.”
