Toppled cement tanker causes havoc in Limerick

Traffic in Limerick city was thrown into turmoil on Tuesday (April 26) when a bulk cement tanker toppled over on the approach to Shannon Bridge.

A massive clean up operation got underway shortly after the accident, which happened at 6.30am.

A special suction pump had to be brought to the scene to remove the bulk cement, before a crane was used to “right” the truck and trailer.
Emergency services also prevented oil and fuel, which spilled from the truck entering the river nearby.

“It was lucky there was no traffic coming in the opposite direction, when the lorry toppled over,” a rescue worker commented.

Gardai from the Public Service Vehicle Office carried out a preliminary examination at the scene, before the truck and trailer were removed for detailed examination.

The driver of the truck, although badly shaken, wasn’t injured in the incident.

Diversions were placed on all access roads to Shannon Bridge and long tailbacks were experienced on all major roads around the city for most of the morning.
