Quarry death toll rises to five

The death of a nine-year-old boy in a quarry in Co. Donegal on Monday (August 22) brings to five the number of people killed in quarry accidents this year.

Joseph McDevitt, Meenacrieve, Anngry, Co. Donegal died on Monday evening when a pile of stones collapsed on top of him. It is understood his father was in the quarry making a delivery of oil at the time.

Gardai say the deceased was standing beside a load of stones, which collaped on him. Attempts to resuscitate him failed and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is understood, that the owner of the quarry, which is located in Annagry, Co. Donegal was also injured in the accident.
The victim’s body was removed to Letterkenny General Hospital where a post mortem was carried out.
