High Court closes Co. Donegal quarry

The Health and Safety Authority (H.S.A.) has obtained a High Court order to close a quarry in Co. Donegal because of serious concerns over unsafe work practices.

Ms. Justice Elizabeth Dunne granted the H.S.A. the order against Barnes Limestone Quarry Ltd, Barnes, Termon Co, Donegal on Friday (August 19).
Counsel for the authority gave evidence than an inspector identified a number of serious hazards at the quarry during a routine visit early last week.

The inspector had visited the quarry two years ago and identified a number of safety concerns, which were still present on the most recent visit.
The court was advised that a prohibition notice was issued by the authority’s inspector prohibiting all activity being carried out in the vicinity of the crushing and screening machinery until it was made safe.

The inspector paid a follow up visit to the quarry to monitor compliance with the notice and discovered that the machinery was still in operation and other safety issues had not been addressed as instructed.
