No height increase for Port Tunnel

The Transport Users’ Group (TUG) is ready to go to war with the Department of Transport over its decision not to increase the operating height at Dublin Port Tunnel, www.irishtrucker.com can exclusively reveal.

Transport Minister, Martin Cullen confirmed last October that the operating height at Dublin Port Tunnel wouldn’t be increased above 4.65 metres on safety grounds.
However, TUG says Minister Cullen was either misled by Department officials or is attempting to mislead the public on the issue.

TUG now has in its possession, a copy of the Atkins report, which was commissioned by then Transport Minister Seamus Brennan to look into the feasibility of increasing the operating height of the tunnel to 4.9 metres.
Until now the Department of Transport and the National Roads Authority were the only ones to see the report.

www.irishtrucker.com understands that the explosive report concluded that the operating height at Dublin Port Tunnel could be raised without compromising safety.
TUG spokesman Jerry Kiersey says Minister Cullen was either mislead by officials at the Department of Transport on the findings of the report or is attempting to mislead the general public.

The umbrella group, which represents hauliers, freight forwarders and business interests, is gearing up to confront Minister Cullen and the Department of Transport on the issue.
