States loses E2 million as non-Irish motorists avoid
prosecution
The State is loosing out on more than E2 million a year, because of its
inability to collect fines from out-of-state motorists, who break traffic
regulations in the Republic.
The Department of Transport confirmed yesterday (January 17) that more
than 22,000 non-Irish motorists have avoided having penalty points added
to the driving licences due to the States inability to impose traffic
fines on foreign motorists who commit offences in Ireland.
The Department of Transport says the loss to the Exchequer is now running
at E2 million.
