EPA refuse Roadstone planning permission for Blessington landfill

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has refused Roadstone Dublin Ltd planning permission to build a landfill site at its quarry in Blessington, Co. Wicklow.

The company had sought permission from the EPA to build a remedial landfill site on its 650-acre quarry to deal with the estimated 110,000 tonnes of waste that had been illegally dumped on the site over the past decade.

However, the EPA has rejected the application on the grounds that the landfill would pose an “unacceptable risk of environmental pollution” as a result of the dump’s proximity to an aquifer supplying water to local residents.
Roadstone Dublin Ltd has 28 days to appeal the decision.
