English truck driver has lucky escape

A truck driver had a near miraculous escape on Sunday (March 13) when he ploughed into a building after swerving to avoid a car.

The incident happened close to the village of Grange on the main Sligo to Bundoran road at around 2.00pm.

The English registered rigid body refrigerated truck collided with a car being driven by a woman, who was taken to Sligo General Hospital, suffering from leg injuries.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene and took almost an hour to free the English truck driver, who suffered extensive injuries in the collision.

One team concentrated on stabilising the roof of the former public house, while a second team tried to pull the truck out of the building.

A Garda spokesman said the driver of the truck was lucky to be alive.
