Sargent claims Government let Roadstone off the hook
Green Party TD Trevor Sargent has accused the Government of allowing Cement
Roadstone to escape prosecution; by letting it clean up a site in Blessington
that contains 300,000 tonnes of illegally dumped waste.
The Green Party leader asked the Dail on Wednesday (May 26) how a company
such as Roadstone, found with perhaps 300,000 tonnes of waste illegally
dumped on its land could claim no knowledge of it and escape prosecution
for the crime, whoever carried it out.
Sargent described as bizarre the fact that the dump will be
made legal under section 55 of the Waste Management Act, without a need
for planning permission.
He called on Environment Minister Dick Roche not to allow a section 55
ruling in this case.
