Goodyear launches puncture-proof tyre
Tyre manufacturer Goodyear is set to produce a puncture-proof
tyre aimed at the commercial vehicle market.
Goodyear claims its DuraSeal technology will automatically seal cuts or
punctures in the tyre and allow the operator to continue to use the tyre
indefinitely.
Goodyear says the new technology uses a gel-like, solvent free compound
built into the inner liner of the tyre. It is designed to consistently
and instantly seal punctures of up to a quarter of an inch.
The tyre casing maintains its sealing capability even after it is
re-treaded. The technology is a long-term solution for an age-old problem,
while aftermarket sealants are temporary fixes, a Goodyear spokesman
commented.
He continued: Unlike this unreliable fix, DuraSeal reduces repair,
downtime and tyre replacement costs. The built in sealant means no messy
clean up for each repair, reduced fire risk during re-treading and no
negative impact in tyre temperature.
The DuraSeal system adds between five and seven pounds in weight to a
tyre and is effective from 40F to 100F.
The new technology is available in Goodyears Unisteel G287 MSA and
G288 MSA tyres for rough terrain and heavy services.
The tyres suit operators working in timber haulage, quarrying, and construction.
