ERSI say more tax on fuel needed
The Economic and Social Research Institute has advised the Government
to put a new tax on fuel including petrol in its latest report.
The ESRI report also says it wants the Government to scrap existing motor
taxes and instead charge drivers for using the roads around major towns
and cities.
The ESRI says that such moves would reduce congestion and climate-damaging
emissions.
The tax on using the roads, along the lines of London's five pounds congestion
charge, would lead to drivers in rural areas paying less than today and
motorists forking out "significantly higher charges for urban driving."
The aim would be to directly tax drivers for the environmental damage
done by their cars.
