Transport system to break even by 2006
The much maligned Luas transport system is expected to break even next
year despite recording huge losses last year, a report has disclosed.
The Luas is in the red to the tune of 1.453 million euros, the annual
Rail Procurement Agency report revealed.
According to the annual report, the financial results were ahead of expectations.
Paid passenger services began on the Sandyford line in July 2004 and on
the Tallaght route the following October.
The report said that so far this year passenger services on both lines
have reached 98 percent of target levels.
"It's a measure of the success to date that both passenger numbers
and revenue have met or exceeded expectations," the report added.
