Government rejects new fuel tax advice

As filling stations nationwide reported heavy demand for diesel and petrol from motorists, the Government has ruled out the introduction of additional taxes on fuel as advised by the Economic and Social Research Institute.

The ERSI's recent report recommended that a carbon tax on fuels be introduced but the Minister for the Environment Dick Roche has knocked that on the head.
Mr. Roche said the Government had ruled out the imposition of a tax on fossil fuels in 2004 and it was inopportune to revisit it now.
